I've experienced this "nasal malfunction" my entire life.
No one has ever understood why I have (what they call a "dog nose") and it's haunted me by being something friends, family and colleagues have relentlessly teased me about.
I can't say it's a psychic phenomenon, because today was the first time I've ever seen a real word that perfectly describes my super sense of smell.
I've been mocked in school and at work, told to leave and get a job as a cadaver dog smelling things only an animal could.
But it's only intensified as i've grown older.
Smelling things that have no verifiable source is "strange" to anyone who's around me when it happens (and it happens many times a day) but i've tried to just accept it as a quirk that makes me, me.
I'll admit that the older i get, and the more often it happens, more intense the odours become, I find myself becoming annoyed - as if im being sent on wild goose chases by my nose, 30 times a day, looking for the source of a smell that can't possibly be where I am.
My mother's always told me in her snobby, condescending tone that I "must have a brain tumor to smell such strange things all the time" and I think I've grown to accept that maybe that IS the cause, but my maternal grandmother often said that I got that trait from her because she had experienced it her whole life as well.
It might be reassuring to know what i've been taught to view as a neurosis, or brain defect is actually a nice gift that could indeed be useful for something other than inciting ridicule.
But for that to happen I'd probably need to talk to some sort of expert on the subject who could fill me in on how you can find out for sure if it's Clairalience, or just a wierd heightened sense.
The topic is: Clairalience
